I came into yoga from a history of weight training and high-impact aerobics. A bit of a jump, right? At the time, I was taking a weekly evening yoga class at my gym and it was my teacher at the time that said to me “you simply MUST try this place I know called Shakti”.
So the year 2000 was the very first time I came to Shakti, and immediately realized I was in a completely different space. The studio was half the size it is now, very ‘intimate’ but there was something compelling about the energy there. Right away, I was drawn to Sharon’s and Sandor’s classes; they were equally challenging and nurturing, appealing to the ‘competitive, athletic’ side of me, though looking back I know I was only scratching the surface. It was in Sharon that I found a teacher whose sincere love of and gratitude for the practice of yoga (on and off the mat) was so magnetic and compelling that I had to keep coming back and discover more!
What Shakti represents for me today is a place where I can always learn something new. In addition to taking classes and different workshops, I’ve also had the pleasure of delving into a new community of like-minded individuals, people who I believe work, live and share with open hearts and open minds. Recently I was honoured to be offered a regular teaching spot in the weekly schedule. As a teacher as well as a student (because there’s simply no end to what you can discover in your journey), I hope to remain a part of the Shakti family as it evolves. As Sharon says, “nothing changes until something changes”. |
